Using post-modernism techniques and inspiration, I created this album cover for Gregory Alan Isakov's "This Empty Northern Hemisphere."
In my research, I learned that Gregory Alan writes a lot of his folk songs in memory of his home. As he travels on tour, he mentions that his songs are a piece of home he can take with him so he never feels alone.
Inspired by this, I chose to illustrate a boy holding his balloon. With Earth as his head and the Moon and his balloon, I wanted to use the symbolism of the moon reminding us of our home here on earth. Sometimes we let go of our knowledge of this, and feel lost and alone, just as a kid might feel unhappiness from a slipped balloon.
Using old photography, and washed textural backgrounds, and typewriter type faces, I wanted this album to look dated and reminiscent of old times.
